THE RADD COMMERCIAL, ROCKERS AGAINST DRUNK DRIVING
PART 1
This has nothing to do with RADD and the way they are running
their organization they are probably responsible for saving many
lives and the reason a lot of us are still here today
ANOTHER LESSON IN LIFE AND ADVICE TO FUTURE ROCKERS .
LIFE IS FUNNY AND WORKS OUT USUALLY FOR THE BEST FOR MOST OF
US. THOUGH OUR REAL DREAMS DON'T COME TRUE, AT LEAST WE
HAVE THAT 9 TO 5 AND ARE SURVIVING AND HAVE FAMILY ,
BUT IT'S THOSE DREAMS AND CONQUESTS WE HAD AND STRUGGLED TO
CREATE IN OUR YOUTH WHEN WE HAD THE TIME AND ENERGY
AND WERE READY TO TAKE ON THE WORLD, THAT GIVE US THE BEST
MEMORIES OF WHEN WE GAVE IT OUR ALL. EVEN THOUGH
FAILING WE DID NOT FAIL. WE EITHER DIDN'T HAVE WHAT IT
TAKES ,WEREN'T IN THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME , OR WERE
AHEAD OF OUR TIME. THAT ALWAYS SEEMED TO BE THE PROBLEM FOR ME.
I ALWAYS LOOKED WHERE I WAS GOING AND TOWARDS THE FUTURE AND WAS
MAKING CLOTHS AND MUSIC THAT WERE ODD. BUT THAT WAS
WHO I WAS AND AM ....WHO WE ALL ARE. THAT'S THE
GROWING PROCESS. THE CREATIVE PROCESS FROM WHICH WE
ALL GET THOSE GREAT IDEAS, OF WHICH I HAVE SO
MANY. UP UNTIL NOW THEY, FOR ONE REASON OR ANOTHER,
HAVE GONE BACK INTO MY CLOSET. BUT THEN THE OTHER DAY I WAS
LISTENING TO THE RADIO WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN I HEAR A SNIPPET OF
"RIDERS ON THE STORM, THERE'S A KILLER ON THE ROAD..."
,AND THEN RAY MANZAREK COMES ON WITH THIS DRUNK DRIVING LINE ,
AND DID HIS PART . A SMILE CAME TO MY FACE. WHY? BECAUSE I
CREATED THAT CONCEPT (THAT COMMERCIAL) 15 YEARS AGO ! WHEN
I GOT HOME, I WENT INTO MY ATTIC AND FOUND ALL THE
LETTERS I WROTE. I RECALL HOW HAPPY I WAS TO USE A SONG
WRITTEN BY ONE OF MY IDOLS FOR A POSITIVE MESSAGE THAT
WOULD STOP PEOPLE FROM GETTING KILLED BY DRUNK DRIVING.
NOT GETTING KILLED WAS A BIG THING TO ME.
I VALUE LIFE, EVERYONE'S, AND AS THEY SAY IT
"IF YOU CAN SAVE ONE LIFE IT'S WORTH IT." I KNEW THIS
IDEA COULD SAVE MANY LIVES. JUST THE FACT THAT IT WAS A
ROCK ICON WHO HAD A DRINKING PROBLEM - HOW IRONIC IT WOULD
BE THAT THIS WOULD BE THE GREATEST COMMERCIAL TO COME OUT AT THE
TIME, WHEN EVERYONE ELSE WAS SELLING OUT TO BEER COMPANIES
ETC. BECAUSE THE TIME WAS PERFECT. MADD HAD JUST
BEEN FORMED AND TOO MANY YOUNG KIDS WERE DYING. I
SAW IT. I LIVED IT. THIS WAS THE RIGHT PLACE
AND THE RIGHT TIME. I WROTE A LETTER TO THE THEN
MAYOR, MARIO CUOMO, WHO WAS IMPRESSED WITH THE COMMERCIAL.
HIS OFFICE SET ME UP WITH A MEETING AT THE TWIN TOWERS WITH THE
TRAFFIC SAFETY BOARD WHO ALSO WERE VERY IMPRESSED WITH MY
IDEA AND SAID THEY WOULD HELP ME IN ANY WAY THEY COULD TO GET IT
AIRED, BUT FIRST I HAD TO CLEAR IT WITH THE DOORS AND THE
DOORS' MUSIC COMPANY. I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE EASY
SINCE THE RESPONSE I HAD RECEIVED WITH THE DMV WAS SO POSITIVE.
I REALIZED THE STRONG EFFECT THIS COULD HAVE ON AN ENTIRE
GENERATION OF YOUTH WHO WERE LISTENING TO THE DOORS AND
JIM MORRISON AND HAD MADE HIM THE IDOL HE IS TODAY, SO I
WROTE TO THE DOORS MUSIC COMPANY AS THEY WERE KNOWN BACK THEN
AND HAD CONVERSATIONS WITH JERRY SWARTZ, WHO HAD A MEETING
WITH THE REMAINING MEMBERS OF THE DOORS AND THOUGH THEY LIKED MY
IDEA, THEY COULD NOT DO IT. THE REASON THEY STATED
WAS THAT THEY DID NOT WANT TO COMMERCIALIZE THE SONG THAT
WAY AND THAT THEY HAD SIGNED A CONTRACT WITH A MOTION PICTURE
STUDIO THAT WAS MAKING A MOVIE ABOUT JIM MORRISON.
WELL AFTER NUMEROUS CALLS BACK TO MR. SWARTZ, THERE WAS NO
WAY ANYONE WOULD LET ME USE IT - NO MATTER WHAT. I
TRIED EVERY CONVINCING WORD AND PLOY OVER THE COURSE OF A YEAR ,
BUT IT WAS TIME TO MOVE ON TO THE NEXT GREAT IDEA. I EVEN
SENT A LETTER OFF TO BEN EDMONDS. I FORGET WHAT HIS JOB
WAS THEN , BUT I THINK HE WRITES FOR ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE NOW.
.THAT WAS A TIME IN MY LIFE WHEN I FELT I COULD
CONTRIBUTE TO ROCK AND ROLL. EVEN IF IT WAS JUST A
COMMERCIAL, IT COULD TOUCH MANY LIVES, AS I'M
SURE IT IS NOW. AS FOR THE REST OF THE STORY, I SENT
THEM A FEW E MAILS. I DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY WILL SAY
TO THIS. I'M SURE THEY REMEMBER MAYBE THEY THOUGHT THEY
CAME UP WITH IT THEM SELVES. THAT HAPPENS
SOMETIMES. SOMETHING IS IN THE BACK OF YOUR MIND SO LONG
YOU START BELIEVING IT'S TRUE UNTIL SOMEONE REMINDS YOU IT'S
NOT. THE MORAL OF THIS STORY IS ALWAYS KEEP THOSE
LETTERS. YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS
AND IF YOU HAVE PAPERWORK TO BACK YOU UP, IT'S
HARDER TO PROVE YOU WRONG.
Don't Drink and Drive
THIS IS PART 1 .PART 2, 3, OR 4 WILL BE THE OUT COME AND FROM
THE TALKS I HAD WITH THE LAWYER AND THE MUSIC PUBLISHER IT'S NOT
GOING TO BE PRETTY
SO IF THIS IS MY ONLY CLAIM TO FAME SO BE IT.
WHEN I THINK OF HOW MANY LIVES COULD BE SAVED, IT'S
ALL WORTH IT. THAT WAS THE WHOLE IDEA IN THE FIRST
PLACE ..... BUT I'M STILL NOT DONE YET. I HAVE TONS
OF OTHER STUFF IN THE CLOSET . KEEP WATCHING
